French Hill Farm Riding Academy opened its doors in 1997 and is now the foremost place to take riding lessons in the Portland-Salem area. The Academy offers riding lessons in English riding for children (7 and older) and adults. The goal of our program is to teach students how to ride, handle and groom horses safely and to the best of their ability.
Our instructors are USHJA certified and have many years of riding and teaching experience. Our school horses are carefully chosen for their quiet temperaments, good manners, and their abilities to help students learn the fundamentals of riding from the beginner to the intermediate/advanced level. Learning to jump over a course of jumps is included in the lessons for those students who wish to and are capable of participating.

Summer Camps

French Hill Farm summer camps are designed especially for campers ages 7-14 who wish to learn how to ride or to improve their present riding skills. Additionally, we offer Kindercamps for children 5 and 6 years of age. Our goal is to teach the basics of riding and taking care of horses in a safe and fun environment.
Boarding/Training

Trainer: Akiko Hamada of Stellar Sport Horses Hunter/jumper training is provided by Akiko Hamada, who operates her Stellar Sport Horses program at French Hill. Akiko has an extensive background of showing and training with top trainers such as 2012 Olympian and World Cup winner, Rich Fellers, and Dressage Master, Dominique Barbier.

How old do you have to be for lessons? We start children at age 5 or 6 if they are capable of listening and following instruction on a horse. We start with a private evaluation lesson to determine their readiness. Do you have many adult riders? Yes, we have adult riders of all ages and abilities who ride with other adults in our program.

Situated on 42 acres of rolling grasslands and tall trees, French Hill Farm offers a beautiful setting for an equestrian facility. We have grass pastures, trails, and a 52 stall barn. There is a large outdoor arena and two indoor arenas, one for the Riding Academy and a larger one for our hunter/jumper trainer.
