For 44 years, Redwood City children and their parents have found fun, learning, and community behind our gate. Open Gate Nursery School is a parent-participation, play-based preschool with classes for children 2-5. In Open Gate's nurturing environment, children develop socially, intellectually, and physically, in an atmosphere of warmth and trust.
Play, stimulating new experiences, adult-child interaction, and time with friends combine to support children's development. We guide children in cooperation, respect, and non-exclusionary play. Parents learn and grow, too. We hone our positive parenting skills through observation, classroom participation, and parent education classes.

In fact, play is great for kids of all ages. Parent-participation: Children and families grow together, so parents join our classrooms and work together to run our wonderful school.

Open Gate's educational philosophy draws on the developmental readiness theory, which teaches us that children's growth and development progress by predictable stages at their own unique pace, and that optimum development occurs when we respect that natural pace. Parent Education

Open Gate parents parents attend one evening parenting classes each month, generally at Open Gate from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. Your child's teacher leads your parent education, and together with your classmates you'll learn about child development, parenting strategies, and educational approaches, looking to the children in the class to provide real-world examples and help you learn.
Our Teachers

Open Gate's experienced teachers plan our curriculum, lead our children's classes, and facilitate our parent education program. They enrich our community with their enthusiasm, wisdom, and passion for early childhood development. Teacher Kristi has been teaching the Multi-Age class and Pre-K programs at Open Gate Nursery School since 2003 and became Open Gate's director in 2006.
