Parents Nursery School is a non-profit, parent-driven nursery school in the heart of Silicon Valley. Established in 1949, we have a rich history based on our diverse community of families from Palo Alto and the surrounding areas. We provide children and their families a nurturing, developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum.
Our students develop in areas such as creativity, cooperation, peaceful conflict resolution, and kindergarten readiness. Parents work alongside the teachers in the classroom to nurture each child's development. We require parents to attend evening parent education meetings (about once monthly). These help parents provide progressive, developmentally-appropriate care at school and home.

HistoryWe have been around since 1949
Report
Parents Nursery School (PNS) began in 1943 as the "Mothers' Cooperative Nursery School, " formed by a group of mothers, on the campus of Stanford University. The co-op thrived, and with encouragement from Dr. Esther Clarke, in 1948, a group of parents raised enough private funds to purchase a permanent site for the school - a turnip patch at the edge of the City of Palo Alto.
Our philosophyPlay-based exploration and parent education
Report
At Parents Nursery School (PNS), we believe that families thrive when children are given ample space to explore, pretend, and learn through play while parents are actively involved in their child's education. We also believe that parents become more effective and connected when given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of early childhood development through parent education, informal observation, and community exchange.
Give your child fun, stimulating learning experiences in one of our two Mixed-Age classes. PNS embraces the joyful, spontaneous benefits children receive from exploring and experimenting in a safe and nurturing environment. We believe that this natural and essential activity called "play" is what enhances cognitive, social, and emotional development in children.
Parent educationGrow as a parent
Report
Parent education classes are taught through lectures, discussions, and observation of children. Parents are an integral part of PNS, working together with the teachers/directors as the administrators and officers of the school. Each family shares in the business operation of the school, thus making it truly a cooperative venture.
