Takoma Park Cooprative
At Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School, a central piece of our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion is equity in urban nature and place-based learning experiences. Hands too small to even begin to hold a pencil or pen, delicately pinch tiny bits of sand, measured in grains. Fingers of one hand seek out bits of tiny colored gravel and pebbles, picking these up just so, to collect as treasures in the palm of the other.

Sitting at a table and holding pencil will never match time spent "cooking" sand. I know the power of story, coming and going. The following week, he told me that whenever he is worried he just picks up a worry stone and it takes care of itself. He told me this with the knowledge and skill that this was his very own story.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Report
Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our ongoing work is to strengthen this commitment and improve our community.

Our goal at the Cooperative School is to foster awareness, compassion, and honesty in righting injustice and working towards equity and anti-racism; to address a national culture of misogyny, bullying, and harassment; to cultivate an environment where individuals of all abilities can thrive; and to understand, support, and affirm LGBTQIA2S+.
Equity in Nature
Report
At Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School, a central piece of our focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is equity in nature. If we, as a group of educators and parents, hold to the idea that nature is only defined as pristine and untouched (Edenic) spaces on the Planet, then we are supporting access to that nature only for an elite population even as we block out ownership and access to indigenous children of those very spaces.
Our Environment
Report
While the school has a long history of play and learning in the out of doors, we have spent the last decade walking purposefully towards creating a platform that supports equity in nature. At our school, we provide access through our play yard and to pockets of urban nature. We extend and expand these opportunities through our summer Tinkering and #optoutdoors programs.
Our Curriculum
Report
Children thrive when offered opportunities to express themselves, through a variety of art materials; through musical instruments, melody and rhythm; and through movement of the physical body through space. The children's visual art is process-rich. This means that children are taught and experiment with a variety of mediums from painting to drawing and collage.
Schedules & Tuition
Report
The school year begins in September and ends in early June and follows the Montgomery County Public Schools with respect to holidays and emergency school closures. The Cooperative School's distinctive brand of progressive education rests on two pillars-attracting creative, innovative, professionally trained educators, and welcoming and guiding engaged adults (co-opers) into the classroom and in administering the school.
