Music is a language, a mode of communication. Our goal at Southern Park Music School is to help people become musically literate. Music literacy involves the ability to read and write music, and the ability to understand, perform, and create music. The language of music can communicate a range of emotions, from joy to sadness, and a range of moods, from tenderness to majesty.
Music can communicate a depth of emotion beyond words. A greater understanding of music often allows a more profound experience of the beauty of music, both as a listener and a performer. At Southern Park Music School, we believe that the best way to explore the language of music is with the help of a qualified and experienced teacher.

Report
During the fall and spring, Southern Park Music School operates on an 18-week term basis. Students take one lesson per week. However, if a student enters mid-term, the fee will be prorated to reflect the number of weeks remaining in the term. Summer lesson schedules may be made in cooperation with your teacher, choosing mutually convenient lesson dates.
Baritone
Report
Middle school, or about 12 years old, is usually the age a student can start to play brass instruments. Band rehearsal is not practice time. Lessons at Southern Park are designed to allow students to reach their true potential. Regular, daily practice (outside of school) on the assigned materials is necessary in order to improve.
Bassoon
Report
It is usually a good idea for a student to have one to two years of experience with another musical instrument prior to beginning the study of the bassoon. Because the instrument is expensive, many students play instruments provided by their band programs at the request of the orchestra or band director until they are advanced enough to make an informed purchase.
Cello
Report
More than an ideal age, what is necessary is that the child is both potty trained and familiar with some kind of schooling routine where he/she has learned to follow directions, to work cooperatively and to manage transitions. Above all, stay clear of CSOs or "Cello Shaped Objects." These are underpriced instruments for sale (under $1000), which are a waste of money since a poor quality instrument hinders a student's learning.
Drums & Percussion
Report
A child needs to be at least 5 or 6 years old, depending on his/her maturity level and attention span. You may rent mallet instruments at Music and Arts (various locations). Both Howren Music and Music & Arts keep practice pads, drum sticks, and mallets in stock for purchase. Occasionally, with the instructor's help, you may be able to locate some good instruments and/or sticks and mallets on eBay.
