Services
Dr. Kurt Sturz established Sturz Pediatric Dentistry in 2006 in hopes of creating a safe and welcoming environment to care for the dental needs of kids in Kern County. To the delight of Dr. Sturz and the benefit of our community, Dr. Chad Abby and his family moved to Bakersfield in 2009.
Having been roommates in dental school, Kurt and Chad knew that they had a common vision for how to practice pediatric dentistry and the desire to work alongside someone they both trusted and respected. In 2011 the practice had outgrown its first office on Truxtun Ave and was relocated to its current location on Brimhall and Calloway where Sturz & Abby Pediatric Dentistry was officially established in 2015.

Thank you very much for visiting our office. Our goal is to make your orthodontic experience as pleasurable as possible. At any point during your visit today, please let us know how we can make you feel more comfortable. At Sturz and Abby Orthodontics, we are committed to providing you with exceptional orthodontic care that will benefit you the rest of your life.
Your child's appointment is extremely important to us. Each appointment is allotted a specific amount of time to attend to your child's needs in a timely manner. If you cannot make your scheduled appointment or would like to change your appointment please contact the front desk at least 24 hours in advance.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), a child's first dental visit should be scheduled around his/her first birthday, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. The most important part of this visit is getting to know the environment, doctor and staff. While we want your child's first visit to our office to be a positive one, we understand that little ones may be quick to express their emotions.
We make every reasonable effort to be available after hours to address true emergencies. Fortunately, many situations are easily managed with OTC pain meds and can be addressed during regular business hours.
Should your child have an emergency situation where they lose consciousness, become unresponsive, have an acute allergic reaction, or swelling that interferes with their airway, please call 911 & seek care from an ER or Urgent Care facility immediately.Additionally, please be aware that access to after hours visits are for established patients only.

So I have been to many different orthodontists and this is by far the best one I have attended. I am 22 years old and I had braces on for 8 years. I been going to Dr. Ricks for 3 years and he does an amazing job at keeping my teeth where they need to be. There has been so much improvement since I’ve been here! Also, everyone is friendly and very welcoming. I would definitely recommend this place for those in need of braces. Thank you Dr. Ricks/Staff for everything you have done!!

My daughter has had serious dental issues since birth and Drm Kurt has taken care of her with kindness, gentleness, and we are able to say he restored her health. Furthermore, Dr. Kurt considers the needs of his support staff and their children at the highest level. Valuing their education throughout the pandemic. Establishing a safe environment for the children to learn and hiring a tutor to help them navigate distance learning. This is an exceptional place beyond any other.

Dr Sturz is incredibly rude. He was very condescending towards my husband and myself and had absolutely zero empathy for our five year old daughter who was having terrible pain even after two over the counter pain medications. It is mind boggling to me that someone who works with children could be so incredibly heartless. Save your child and yourself from a horrible experience and run (don't walk) away from this Dr.

Dr Sturz is impatient and flat out rude to children who are nervous. My son was 4 when we first brought him here. He is an anxious child but did everything Dr Sturz told him to do although he did cry. Dr Sturz rolled his eyes and sighed several times but promised that if my son did a good job that he would be able to get something out of the treasure box. When it was all over, my son asked about the treasure box and Dr Sturz turned to him and harshly said "you don't get the treasure box because YOU CRIED". I was stunned. He didn't scream. He didn't throw a fit. He simply

This is a great place to introduce kids to the dentist. My kids aren't afraid of going to dentist because we come here. Friendly staff, dentists that explain everything. The facility is big and clean. Everything's thought out - like TVs in the ceiling for the kids to watch while on the chair.
The only con would be they're so booked up, you really need to book in advance.

Best pediatric dentist in town hands down. They are considered out of network for our dental coverage but I rather pay more and my girls have a great expert rather than cut costs and then be traumatized. They can't wait to see Dr. Abby. He's amazing, always takes time out to let you know how the kids are doing and what they are planning to do day of. It's amazing. I love them!!

My son has autism and it was his first ever dentist appointment today. I was honestly dreading this appointment. “Will the staff understand?” “Will they be patient enough?” AND YES. They ABSOLUTELY were. The staff there were SO kind, INCREDIBLY helpful, all around just awesome. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Sturz and Abby is comfortable, family oriented, and an inviting place which is important when it comes to my child’s (or any child’s) care. I cant believe we have to wait 6 months until we see our friends at Sturz and Abby again!

The best pediatric dentists hands down! The office is kid friendly but not in a cheesy way. The staff is super sweet and just genuinely nice. The receptionists are amazing and take the time to explain everything in layman’s terms. The doctors are kind and gentle and according to my son “cool” lol! They are punctual. When they give you an… appointment, expect to be called back at that exact time! Ah-mazing!!! The way they explain things to the child is perfect. They don’t lie or trick the child but they have their own lingo that the child just understands. No restraints

We took our toddler here for the first 4 visits, age 1 through 2.5. Dentist & staff were friendly and did their best to try to entertain the kid while checking the teeth & doing some light brushing. No x-rays were done in our 4 visits, something about how they don't do x-rays till child is 3-4 years of age.

I really liked this place. My son went there until he was 18. I started taking my granddaughter when she was 2. I really loved how they were with her. The next visit when she was 3 she was crying and she is always shy or aprenhensive around strangers. He insisted that she had to give him a hug or he was taking back her goodie bag. She refused and he actually took the stickers and toys out of the bag and we left. He should not force a child to hug him. I was shocked. I really liked it there but im going somewhere else. I felt uncomfortable.

Wow i can't believe i haven't yelped them yet!! I started out bringing of my sons here...i have an autistic son who actually loves the dentist. We started coming here when their other dentist (a popular one) in town whom we saw for many years wanted to start charging a $75 fee for seeing disabled kids!!! Uh yea we left...i called this office and they were so welcoming and no...no "extra fee" for disabled. From the first appointment Dr.Abby was amazing with both of them the staff amazing i have had absolutely no complaints, the waiting room is clean and inviting and comfy.

Positives: Location. Clean, nice office. Courteous staff and fun things to entertain the kids while they wait. Friendly dentist.
Negatives:They have an absurd policy that once a child is over three years old they HAVE to go back alone. I'm sorry, but I am not going to have my shy, anxious four year old go back alone because you don't feel like putting chairs for parents next to the dental chairs. It's not worth having him be afraid and hate the dentist. I have also read too many stories of things happening to children in the back of dental offices while parents were sitting
