The original Montessori School of Westminster was created by a group of dedicated parents and individuals who chose the Montessori Method as the ideal learning style for their children. The non-profit, parent-run school has been managed by a board of trustees and has operated continuously in Carroll County, Maryland since the school opened its doors in 1974.
Philosophy

The Montessori method of education was first introduced in Rome in 1907 by Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori believed that in order for preschool, elementary school and middle school children to develop their physical, intellectual and spiritual powers to the fullest potential, they must have the freedom to explore the world around them in an orderly, disciplined environment.

Dr. Maria Montessori based her philosophy on the principles of independence, observation, following the child, correcting the child, the prepared environment and the absorbent mind. The Montessori classroom is child centered and under the direction of a trained guide these principles are incorporated.

We want to connect with our alumni families and students to learn how their MSW years have played a role in additional academic experiences and subsequent careers. Dr. Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in the small town of Chiaravalle in Italy. She graduated in 1896 with a degree in medicine and became the first female physician in Italy. While she was successful in the medical community, her real desire was to help children. In 1906, she gave up medical practice to work with children in Rome.
