Young Musicians Choral Orchestra
The Young Musicians Choral Orchestra is a nationally recognized East Bay youth program for low-income, underprivileged students, which provides a robust combination of musical training, academic reinforcement, and personal development. The no-cost program serves 70 students through an educational foundation in orchestral, jazz, and choral music.

Students from the program matriculate into and excel at premiere conservatories and universities. All YMCO students have graduated from high school and have been accepted into prestigious universities and conservatories. Over the past 10 years, our students have garnered over $13 million in scholarships.

The mission of the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra (YMCO) is to use high quality, intensive musical training, academic support, and personal guidance to improve the lives of talented, low-income students, ages 9-18, from throughout the Bay Area.

By advancing their academic, musical, and personal accomplishments throughout their middle-school and high-school years, YMCO enhances students' competitive appeal and success at four-year universities and conservatories.All of YMCO's services are provided at no cost.

Founded in 1968 as a summer outreach program, Young Musicians Choral Orchestra has transformed the lives of over 3,000 Bay Area Youth.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Daisy Newman, who took the helm in 2003, the program erupted from a modest youth music program into a national model, providing a rigorous and robust combination of musical training, academic reinforcement, and personal development for low-income, underprivileged children.

Our goal is to develop students into musicians on the competitive level of conservatory musicians by the time they graduate from the program, regardless of whether they choose to major in music or not. We provide top of the line instruction with brilliant teachers and visiting artists. Students are held to a standard of excellence and work with teachers, conductors, and peers to achieve it.

YMCO is a chorus and an orchestra, combined, to provide students the experience to successfully engage in music-making on the highest level. The human voice is Mother Nature's oldest instrument, unduplicated, unique and beautiful. The chorus is a natural outlet for students to use their voices, electrifying and inspiring audiences with gorgeous choral sound.
2019 YMCO Summer Institute

A Celebration of Bernstein's Westside Store, held at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. This year, the summer institute was held at Claremont Middle School in Oakland, CA.

The choral orchestra kicked off the night with Bernstein's choral piece, "Take Care of this House, " alongside world-renowned mezzo-soprano, Frederica von Stade, and then marched to their instruments to perform Danzon No. 2 (Arturo Marquez), West Side Story Medley, and Mambo.Mambo received an encore and a standing ovation!
