For the shallow water angler, spring in the Florida Keys is a time of great anticipation. Water temperatures are on the rise and the winter cool fronts, with their stiff north winds, are on the wane. The number of fishable days increases, the tides push more water in and around our archipelago, and, most days, the air temperature is absolutely.

Our spring/summer season is in full swing, and so is the flats fishing! If you've ever wanted to catch one of our "rockstar" flats fish (bonefish, permit, and tarpon) from a kayak, summer is a great time to hone your skills. The winds are usually light, making it easier to see fish and easier to cover water in a self-powered.

About Your Guide
Report
My name is Randy Morrow and I hope I get the opportunity to take you kayak fishing here in the Lower Florida Keys and Key West. I first paddled a kayak in August of 2001 and immediately fell in love with it. By March the following year, I had secured a part-time job as a kayak guide for Lazy Dog Outfitters, doing eco-tours there for over 5 years.

Most important is a positive attitude and open mind to soak up the knowledge and tips I'll pass along as well as the incredible natural beauty of the Keys. Technically, we are each in our own separate "vessel", so we each need a separate license. It's kind of silly, but it's out of my hands. My standard trip is 5 hours, which usually proves to be plenty of Florida sun and exercise for most clients.

I have been on the Jackson Kayak Fishing Team since 2012 and conduct my charters and rentals using their high-quality fishing kayaks. These kayaks are all made to both paddle well and allow the angler to stand for easier sight fishing. Further, they have dual hi/lo seating, giving the paddler the option of raising the seat for better visibility, or lowering it for easier paddling and covering water more quickly.
Kayak Fishing
Report
Fishing from a kayak in the Lower Keys is inshore, shallow-water fishing. Because the Keys sit on a wide, shallow shelf, the closest deep water (meaning deeper than 20 feet or so) is about 6 miles out, and out of reach for a standard 5 hour trip in a kayak. Blue water fish like mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, etc., are best pursued from a power boat and I'm happy to recommend a few charter captains for you to pursue these species.

My standard trip is 5 hours, which usually proves to be plenty of Florida sun and exercise for most clients. However, if you're "hardcore" and would like to do something more, let me know. I'll put together a game plan and pro-rate the guide fee accordingly. If you'd like some help, but don't want to hire me for a charter, let's do a consultation.
