Emerald Credit Union was originally chartered as the Garfield Heights School Employees' Credit Union in 1955, serving only the employees of that school district.

Free overdraft protection transfers to an associated Share Draft Checking Account are also available, subject to Regulation D (please refer to Important Account Information: Disclosures & Notices). A minimum par value deposit of just $5.00 is required to open a Youth Share Savings Account. This par value must be maintained at all times to keep the account in good standing.
