Because of SKA's strong resolve to offer high-quality martial arts to the public, SKA has remained non-commercial, non-profit, and continues to offer authentic, traditional martial arts instruction at affordable rates under the direction and leadership of Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima, founder, through more than 140 dojos across the United States and Canada with affiliates worldwide.In 2018, Ohshima Sensei appointed a shihan for each national affiliate.

In the contemporary period, from around 1900 to the present time, Master Funakoshi Gichin was the most important influence in the development of Karate as we know it today. At the age of 11 years, he began to study Karate and was a devout student of the two greatest masters of all time: Yasutsune (Anko) Itosu and Yasutsune (Anko) Azato.

Tsutomu Ohshima is the founder of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). Mr. Ohshima's branch of the Shotokan world has become known as Shotokan Ohshima Karate-do. Practicing daily, he pursued sumo wrestling from the age of five until he was fifteen; kendo (Japanese sword fighting) from the ages of eight to fifteen, and judo from the ages of nine to thirteen.

Why should somebody want to start karate training? There are many reasons, including staying physically and mentally fit, learning how to defend oneself, and pursuing the deeper meaning of Karate-Do. Regardless of your age, sex, or current physical condition, you can begin karate practice and enjoy it.
