Here at The Studio School, learning and relationships go hand in hand and are alive with passion and curiosity. We are dedicated to creating a community that celebrates the richness of life and the common bonds of all humanity. Students are empowered to integrate what they learn with who they are. As independent thinkers they achieve a deep and lasting academic excellence and embrace a life-long love of learning.
Our educational philosophy is rooted in relationships and empowers children to integrate who they are with what they learn. OCA New York, a civil rights organization, hosted the competition to combat hate crimes through art. An original play by our middle school students about three groups of New Yorkers finding ways to connect in a year of disconnection.

We are dedicated to excellence and - as with all small not-for-profit schools - tuition alone does not cover our annual basic operating expenses. Thus charitable giving is critically important to Studio.
For Studio to stay small and tailor its vigorous curriculum specifically for each child, to build our endowment, and to allow us to continue to offer need-based scholarships to students of merit, we rely on generous contributions from our parent body and our extended community of friends. We are enormously grateful to our families and friends, whose generous spirit and avid participation are reflected by their continued charitable support.

As you get to know us, you will notice the quality of care and attention with which Studio teachers engage children in our curriculum, together fostering the joy of inquiry and imagination, developing a strong work ethic, expanding knowledge, and embracing academic excellence. A Studio education is from the inside out, and cultivates the values of character, scholarship, and balance.
Mission and History

Our students learn to value intellectual and creative ideas, taking pleasure in the process of discovery. We seek a deep and lasting academic excellence, one that is achieved when children are motivated to embrace for themselves the journey of learning.
The Studio School opened in 1971, in the heart of Greenwich Village, as a one-room schoolhouse with 25 students, ages 4 to 12, with the knowledge that learning results naturally from a child's own inner drive to find out about the world. Our founders, Dolores and Robert Welber, believed that there's a strong interplay of the emotions and the intellect in learning.

Part of our building on West 95th Street was home to 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon when she wrote a letter to The New York Sun that resulted in the 1897 editorial, "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus!" Today, the Virginia O'Hanlon Scholarship Fund provides need-based aid for students of merit and honors not only Virginia's personal quest for truth and knowledge, but also her life as an educator and advocate for children.
