Therapeutic Riding
Report
Therapeutic riding began in Europe in the early 1950's inspired by the performance of Liz Hartel in the 1992 Helsinki Olympic Games. Despite being partially paralyzed from polio, Liz won an equestrian silver medal in dressage. Medical and Equine Professionals took note of how horseback riding had benefited Liz physically, and therapeutic horseback riding was born.
Eos and Its Program
Report
Eos was founded in 1992 by now Executive Director Debbie Smith. She learned about therapeutic riding when she was recovering from a back injury and understood how riding can benefit people with physical problems. With a modest amount of money donated by friends and businesses in Millville, PA and a great deal of determination, she began the program with six riders and two ponies that she owned.
Our Instructors
Report
My name is Debby Reifendifer. I have been a therapeutic riding instructor with Eos almost from its inception. My best friend, Debbie Smith had asked if I could possibly give an hour a week to help her out with this new program she was starting. The one hour was an understatement, because once I was at Eos and volunteered with one rider and then another, I could not get enough of the love and smiles that were in abundance.
