Under the leadership of founder Namita Khanna Nariani, a visionary choreographer with formal training in architecture, weve cultivated a unique pedagogical approach that harmonizes music and movement. Our faculty comprises seasoned instructors with decades of combined experience, including Thomas Knight (Taiko Maestro since 2007) and Eishita Nariani (Head Guru since 1994). Kathak Dance Instruction
Our Kathak program teaches the rhythmic storytelling traditions of North Indian classical dance. Students master fast-paced footwork, chakkars (spins), and expressive gestures while developing physical stamina and artistic interpretation skills. Classes cater to beginners through advanced dancers, with specialized training for performance ensembles. Our curriculum integrates cultural context with technical precision, preparing students for both solo and group performances.
Taiko Drumming Ensemble
The Mudra Taiko Ensemble combines traditional Japanese drumming with dynamic choreography. Participants learn proper drumming techniques, rhythmic patterns, and performance presentation under the guidance of our Taiko Maestro. This program builds physical strength, group coordination, and cultural appreciation through powerful percussive performances that complement our dance productions.
Cultural Workshops
Our workshops explore the history and techniques of Indian and global dance forms. Designed for schools and community organizations, these interactive sessions include live demonstrations, audience participation, and educational materials. Namita founded Mudra Dance Studio in 1993 after studying Kathak under Bhima Shankar. With formal training in architecture and dance, she blends artistic vision with structural precision to create innovative choreography that has trained generations of Colorado dancers.
Thomas Knight
Taiko Maestro
Leading our Taiko Ensemble since 2007, Thomas brings decades of percussion expertise to Mudra. He specializes in merging traditional Japanese drumming techniques with contemporary performance styles, creating powerful rhythmic experiences for both performers and audiences.

My first introduction to Mudra was as an audience member for an annual UTSAV performance, and I was blown away by their creativity, passion, dedication, and talent. My daughter and I started dancing with them and are still repeatedly awed by them. Mudra is made up of exceptional human beings, lead by the fearless guru Namitia. Whether you want to dance with them or just watch them, your time will be more than well spent with Mudra!

Been dancing with Mudra Dance Studio since 2013. Being new to Denver at the time and having no family near by, Sunday's with Mudra gave me that family get together feel to look forward to. A very welcoming and diverse group with great energy and passion for dance!
