AAC is any tool that allows individuals to express thoughts, wants and needs, feelings, and ideas. This includes picture communication boards, speech-generating devices, and tangible objects. AAC is augmentative when used to supplement existing speech, and alternative when used in place of speech that is absent or not functional.

A comprehensive AAC assessment includes case history, caregiver questionnaire, informal, and formal measures all designed to find the right technology fit for the individual. The whole person and their circle of support is considered in dynamic assessment. We work within a feature-matching process framework that considers sensory/motor status, language level, symbol type, portability, and others.
