Services
Amenities
Report
Orcas is home to a quite a few resorts, inns and bed-and-breakfast establishments, but they fill up quickly during the summer months. If you're planning a visit, we strongly recommend that you make arrangements well in advance. The following list is by no means complete, but it will give you an idea of where you can stay on Orcas.
Bike Routes
Report
The arrival of the ferry on Orcas means one important thing to cyclists: traffic. A large ferry might disgorge 100 or more cars, and most of them end up on the Horseshoe Highway route into Eastsound (8). It's a good idea to save your lungs and your sanity by waiting until the crowd has dispersed. Although Horseshoe Highway is the shortest and flattest route into town, the volume and speed of the traffic can be intimidating.
Travel Info
Report
The Washington State Ferry is the most practical and least expensive way for most cyclists to reach Orcas. The ferry system runs car/passenger/bicycle boats to the islands from a mainland terminal in Anacortes, about 80 miles from Seattle. To get to the Anacortes terminal from Seattle, take Interstate 5 north past Mount Vernon and exit onto Highway 20 at Burlington.
Orcas Island Facts
Report
Orcas is one of the San Juan Islands, located above the northern entrance to Puget Sound, about 85 air miles north of Seattle in Washington state. Nobody seems to agree on how many islands make up the archipelago, but approximately 175 points of land are significant enough to warrant names, and four - Orcas, San Juan, Lopez, and Shaw - stand out as the largest and most populous.
Activities
Report
Some people come to the San Juans so stressed from their day-to-day lives that they're content to lounge in the sun and listen to the sweet sound of the phone not ringing. Others want to fill their vacation to the brim with activities of every possible kind. Most of the visitors we meet are somewhere in between.
