Most mechanics call this repacking or overhauling the bearings. The main bearings on a bicycle are the front and rear hubs, headset, and bottom bracket bearings.
During High School from 1979-1983, I worked as a mechanic at Strings and Spokes in Los Alamos New Mexico. I honed my skills under the tutelage of Dave Yeamans, who taught me many tricks of the trade. His most practical advice was "If the shop is on fire, make sure you tighten the pedals before you leave!"
