Mathematics, on the grandest scale, is the language of the universe. It is what we use to measure, investigate, and strive to understand all the interactions within, and surrounding us. On a more societal level, a basic understanding of mathematics is necessary for school advancement, college entry, and often, the more prestigious and well paying jobs, now and for the foreseeable future.
No matter how you measure it, the field of mathematics is important to understand. Unfortunately, it is also the single most likely field of study to bring high school students to tears at the kitchen table, and college students into their professor's office after hours. As with anything in life, math comes easily to some, and not so much to others.
