Since our founding in 1995, Counter Culture has been a relentless pursuit of coffee perfection through a dedication to real environmental, social, and fiscal sustainability and a commitment to creating cutting-edge coffee people. History

Counter Culture Coffee is founded in Durham, NC by Brett Smith and Fred Houk who met while Brett was in business school at UNC. We launched a bird-friendly coffee line called Sanctuary Coffee. We were one of the first roasters to sell shade-grown coffee, introducing our Sanctuary Coffee line to the industry at the 1997 Specialty Coffee Association of America event in New Orleans.

Each year, we donate $1 per pound from our Iridescent winter blend to fund transformative projects in coffee-producing countries. The money raised from Iridescent will go toward deepening our Seeds fund-a program that awards grants to producer-driven sustainability projects. Because good work, good cheer, and great coffee is more than just a winter theme.

To celebrate the cities we call home we are teaming up with local ceramic artists in all our Training Center locations to create a series of limited-edition mugs. The Atlanta Mug is the second in this series, where we partnered with Charlotte Smith Studio to create a custom hand-painted and hand-thrown porcelain vessel.
