The public recreation areas at The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge offer you abundant opportunities to hike, bike, fish, canoe, and kayak over miles of waterways and trails within a vast protected space on the edge of urban life. The Refuge is home to endangered species such as the snail kite and wood stork, and the previously endangered American alligator.

You'll join like-minded people who believe in environmental and wildlife conservation, and who treasure the natural heritage of the Everglades.

When you visit the Refuge, you're likely to encounter our volunteers, possibly anywhere! You may notice folks working throughout the Refuge who are not dressed in the Fish & Wildlife uniforms, or conducting interpretive walks, answering questions in the Visitor Center, or serving customers in the Nature Store.

The 221-square-mile Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is the northernmost end of the Everglades, and is home to the American alligator and the endangered Everglades snail kite, as well as up to 257 species of birds that visit the refuge wetlands during the year.

Open from sunrise to sunset, the park offers nature walks, a Visitor Center with exhibits and information, a 5.5-mile canoe trail, a 12-mile bicycle trail, hiking on 50 miles of trails, bird watching, bass fishing, and restrooms.Behind the Visitor Center in Boynton Beach and walkable for all ages, a 0.4-mile boardwalk loops around an extraordinary cypress swamp area, one of the last remaining in the area.

At the Visitor Center, located in the Cypress Swamp next to the 0.4 mile boardwalk, you'll receive an informative, all-ages introduction to The Refuge. Learn about the wildlife and natural habitats. See what the interior of the Refuge looks like on a virtual airboat ride. Visit other informative and interactive exhibits and displays including the history of the Refuge, a tree island and gator hole diorama, and night sounds of the Everglades.

Locally and statewide, the Friends group is a voice for environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and biodiversity. Through our representation in the Everglades Coalition, we are active participants on issues related to the health and restoration of the Everglades and its habitat, and supporting positions taken by the Coalition.
