Phoenix Herpetological Society
PHS was founded in 2001 by three long-time, passionate reptile enthusiasts with a vision to make a difference for reptiles in the state of Arizona. There were plenty of organizations to rescue many species of animals from dogs and cats to birds. However, there was no such facility or refuge for unwanted or rescued reptiles.

Reptile owners had no outlet to relinquish ownership if needed nor was there a resource to acquire accurate, reliable information on the care and husbandry of reptiles as pets. In addition, native and non-native species were being destroyed by state facilities and other animal rescue agencies solely due to lack of knowledge regarding care and housing of these amazing creatures - native and exotic.
Services
Winter Camp Schedule
Report
Use of a face mask will be required by the campers, counselors and CITs (and volunteers) while they are inside. Inspired by our awesome summer camp curricula & designed to give budding young herpetologists a chance to learn about reptiles & PHS while on Fall Breaks from school, PHS now offers full day camps(ages 9-12, about 15 kids per camp) and 1/2 day camps(ages 6-8, about 10 kids per camp)!
Conservation Efforts
Report
Since its inception in 2001, the staff and volunteers of PHS have dedicated the majority of their time to rescuing reptiles, and many times rehabilitating those reptiles.

Our services have grown over the years from solely taking in unwanted reptile pets to rattlesnake removal, rattlesnake removal training, helping take in and reunite lost and found reptiles, working with law enforcement agencies for illegal or confiscated animals, and even helping special needs reptiles.
Success Stories
Report
This is Lindsey, I adopted a bearded dragon with MBD from you a month or so ago. I wanted you and your fellow staff members to know how well he is doing and how much my students love him. His name is now Ivar which who was a Viking king who was disabled. Ivar surprisingly loves all the kids and certainly has his favorites.
Location
Report
Appointments are REQUIRED for any visit to the sanctuary. All tours, surrenders, lost & found drop offs, etc. must have a reservation. Once the reservation or appointment has been made, our physical, actual location will be given out. This is our policy so that we can best help you and your situation as well as care for all of the animals that call PHS home now and in the future.
Sponsors & Partnerships
Report
Midwestern University students come to our facility to conduct behavioral studies, take animal handling classes or whatever else we can do to aid in hands on study! The King Cobra Symposium was held in the Netherlands this year and we were a proud Silver sponsor to aid in the conservation of this wonderful species.
