Manatees have already reached a record number of deaths this year - and if we don't restore additional areas of their natural habitat, we could lose even more. Call on Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis to save the mighty manatee! Learn more and watch a sneak preview of this new weekly series with biologist and conservationist Jeff Corwin and Defenders of Wildlife.
Leave a legacy gift to Defenders to protect the wildlife and wild places you love for generations to come. Up to a million species are facing extinction - some within the next decade - unless we take immediate action to save them. You can be a part of the solution for endangered species: support efforts to protect the wild right now.

About Us
Report
Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities. Founded in 1947, Defenders of Wildlife is the premier U.S.-based national conservation organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of imperiled species and their habitats in North America.
American Crocodile and Alligator
Report
The alligator uses its powerful tail to propel itself through water. While alligators move very quickly in water, they are generally slow-moving on land. They can, however, move quickly for short distances. Alligators are a keystone species benefiting the marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes where they live and many other species found within their natural community.
Amphibians
Report
They are extremely sensitive to changes in the environment and can give scientists valuable insight into how an ecosystem is functioning. And because amphibians are both predators and prey, many other animals are affected by them. The U.S. has more species of salamanders than any other place in the world.
Bald Eagle
Report
Its distinctive brown body and white head and tail make it easy to identify as our national symbol, even from a distance. Under the Endangered Species Act, the bald eagle's recovery was made possible through captive-breeding programs, reintroduction efforts, vigorous law enforcement and habitat protection-including the designation of national wildlife refuges and the protection of nest sites during the breeding season.
Beaver
Report
Beavers used to live in almost every perennial (year-round) stream in North America and numbered in the many millions. But as demand for their fur skyrocketed between American colonization and the early 20th century, they were trapped almost to extinction.
Despite reintroductions and natural expansion, beavers still have yet to return to many places where they used to live, and many of these areas could use more beavers to restore crucial wetland habitat.Through building dams and lodges, beavers are considered ecosystem engineers because they raise water levels, slow water speed and change water direction.
