Formerly in the royal libraries of India's most powerful emperors, maharajas, and princes, they were later held in the private collections of connoisseurs such as Nasli and Alice Heeramaneck, Christian Humann, Robert Ellsworth and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The gallery specializes in sculpture, paintings, and decorative arts from the Indian subcontinent created over a span of more than 2,500 years.
Unique artworks were created both for spiritual and courtly purposes in Tibet, Nepal, India, Thailand, Burma, and Indonesia. Many different interpretations of religious iconography are depicted in sculpture, painting, and finely-crafted objects for imperial and ritual use.

Carlton C. Rochell, Jr. began his career in 1984 at Sotheby's in New York. Recognizing the growing market for Indian, Himalayan, and Southeast Asian art, Sotheby's organized its first sale in this area in 1985, and under Mr. Rochell's leadership, an Indian and Southeast Asian art department was established full-time in 1988, the first of its kind in the United States.
