Here at Speaks we have one of the only Certified Funeral Celebrant programs in the Kansas City area. Our Celebrants will help you create a service that reflects your wishes, beliefs, values, and cultural background. We believe that with the help of a Celebrant you can concentrate on your family and honoring the life of the special person you cherish.

You all were fantastic! We appreciate the way you comforted us, you answered our questions, and you made us feel so at ease and unburdened. Thank you again for the wonderful service and the compassion you showed us. We are here to care for families and their loved ones as they grieve and celebrate life.

About Us
Report
Roland and Beth Speaks originally founded Speaks funeral home in 1936. Since that time, three generations of family owners have been proud to serve the community, while making sure that the main focus of our staff will always be to honor the needs of the families we serve.

With so many funeral homes in the Kansas City area having sold to large out-of-town conglomerates, it is important to most families to know that we live right here in the area, attend local churches, and are involved in the local community in many ways.Even in Independence, MO, not all funeral homes are locally owned.
What is a Funeral
Report
All we need to do is say the word "funeral" and within microseconds, you have an image in your mind of what a funeral looks like. This mental image comes from many sources: the geographical place, culture and society in which we live; our faith; our life experience.

Obviously then, a funeral service in Borneo would look very different from one held in Tanzania; there are even significant differences between the funerals held in ethnically and/or geographically diverse regions of North America.Yet, despite the differences, these funeral services have much in common.
Traditional Funeral Services
Report
A funeral service, whether traditional or more modern (memorial service or celebration-of-life), has two functions: to acknowledge the death and lifetime achievements of an individual and to bring grieving family members and friends together in support of one another during this difficult time. If you are interested in making funeral arrangements for a loved one, we invite you to call us to begin.
Burial Services
Report
The earliest human burial dates back 100,000 years making it one of the longest-lived and most widespread of traditions. For an overview of the many different burial traditions, check out the websites in the Resources section below. We have the deepest respect for this traditional practice. If you are interested in learning more about the burial services we offer, please review the following information.
Funeral FAQ
Report
First is the purchase price of the "right to use" the burial plot (unlike a real estate purchase, where you buy the land and all the structures on it; here you are only purchasing what is called the "interment rights" to the land). In addition, there are fees for the "opening" and "closing" of the gravesite; and any fees required to obtain the necessary permits and to maintain cemetery files and records.
