
As a national advocate for quality traffic safety education, ADTSEA is elevating the driver education standard and providing resources to support driving schools across the nation. ADTSEA hosts conferences, develops drivers education materials, issues credentials to a driver ed instructors, and provides consultative services for driving schools.
In 1970, ADTSEA took over the management of the National Student Safety Program (NSSP) from the National Education Associations Safety Commission (which was disbanded at that time) and has maintained this program ever since.

The national credentialing system is designed to improve the quality of driver education teachers and instruction. It is also designed to standardize teacher training in driver education and make teacher training more available across the nation.

Established by ADTSEA in 1956, NSSP has proven to be successful for thousands of teen leaders and helped to empower them to make changes in their schools and communities. Last year's NSSP Conference in Burlington, VT had 33 students and 11 advisors in attendance, representing four states (Hawaii, Illinois, and Vermont and Wisconsin).

Each year ADTSEA administers two awards recognizing excellence in driver education: the Richard Kaywood Memorial Award and the Teacher Excellence Award. Beginning in 1985, an award is presented at the annual ADTSEA conference to an individual for outstanding contributions to traffic safety. The award was established in memory of Dr. Richard Kaywood who served the Association and traffic safety education for many years.
