Dr. Kwan received a B.S. in biology from UCLA, graduated magna cum laude, and completed his medical training at USC. He executed an internship at the University of Rochester Medical Center and returned to Los Angeles for a residency at UCLA. He became the Chief Resident of dermatology at King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles and then opened his current practice in San Francisco, California.

Birthmarks, port wine stains, and freckles and other forms of pigmentation occur naturally. The most common birthmarks fall into two categories - vascular marks and pigmented marks. Vascular marks include port wine stains, salmon patches, and hemangiomas. These are made of blood vessels that have been damaged or didn't form correctly in the womb, causing a red discoloration of the skin.
