The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) was founded in 1970 byJoan Myers Brown. Created out of a need to provide performance opportunities for Black dancers, who were then systematically denied entrance in many local dance schools and had even fewer professional performance outlets.

PHILADANCO! has since grown into a professional dance company that is recognized across the nation and around the world for its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers, and captivating performances.Established on principles of providing opportunity, inclusion, and hope, PHILADANCO! bridges cultural divides and consistently performs before sold-out audiences of people from diverse ethnicities and communities.

PHILADANCO! celebrates our re-opening at the Kimmel Cultural Campus in a not-to-be-missed premier weekend! Featuring world premiere works from Bakari Lindsay, Co-founder of Toronto-based dance company Collective of Black Artists, Vietnam's Thang Dao, Broadway's Ray Mercer, and emerging choreographer Kathy Smith.

At PHILADANCO!, Dance Education programming cultivates and develops young, emerging dancers and choreographers. Our commitment to expanding knowledge and access to dance arts throughout local, regional and national communities is achieved via community-based activities and initiatives.

PHILADANCO created DANCO 2 (D/2) Apprentice Company as a result of foreseeing the need to cultivate young aspiring dancers (ages 15-23) who demonstrated promise and the desire for a professional dance career.Through an extensive evaluation process, members of D/2 are selected and then trained in professional level classes.

In 1970, Joan Myers Brown founded PHILADANCO! to address the lack of professional opportunities for dancers of color in the Delaware Valley.

Thanks to her determination and the support of funders and donors for 50 years, PHILADANCO! has become a premier Philadelphia cultural institution, performing for over 100,000 people across the country and around the world each year, with thousands of alumni represented in dance, the arts, business, education, and government around the world.PHILADANCO! relies on charitable contributions to support its artistic and educational work.
