Dr. Leif Hertzog is a 4th generation Long Beach ophthalmologist who has practiced for 27 years, and together with his son, Dr. Dieter Hertzog, they own and operate Long Beach's leading eye institute.

The Hertzog family legacy goes back to the late 1800s with Dr. Charles Hertzog, MD, who graduated from medical school in 1896 and went into private practice in the South Side of Pittsburgh. An unfortunate illness took his life early in his career but one of his four children followed in his footsteps.

Lasik stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. The procedure involves creating a 'flap' on the front of the eye (the cornea), removing or 'ablating' the underlying tissue to reshape it, then laying the flap back down over the area of the cornea that has just been reshaped.
