Traditional Japanese Martial Arts Training in Tempe, AZ
At Renshinkan, we specialize in Jiyushin-ryu Aikibudo and Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo, blending traditional Japanese martial arts principles with modern educational methods. Our dojo emphasizes the Mind-Body-Spirit connection (ki-ken-tai-itchi) through systematic mastery of formal techniques and immersive drills. We prioritize personal growth over competition, fostering a disciplined yet joyful environment where students develop self-defense skills alongside qualities like self-confidence, stress management, and mental clarity.

Our approach, rooted in Kano Jigoro's philosophies of 'best use of energy' and 'mutual welfare,' encourages students to take ownership of their training while supporting peers. With a lineage tracing back to influential martial artists like Ueshiba Morihei and Tomiki Kenji, we preserve classical techniques while adapting teaching methods for contemporary learners.

Services
Jiyushin-ryu Aikibudo
This synthesis of Aikido and Judo focuses on throws, joint locks, and weapon techniques. Our systematic approach combines paired kata with randori practice to develop practical self-defense skills while emphasizing principle-based movement. Students learn to apply techniques against realistic attacks while cultivating body awareness and mental discipline through structured drills and partner work.
Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo
A 400-year-old staff combat system using a 50-inch jo. Training develops spatial awareness and timing through classical techniques that integrate elements of sword and spear fighting. Practitioners learn to defend against multiple attackers while maintaining proper distance and posture, with movements refined through repetitive kata practice and partner drills.
Aiki Weapons Training
Includes Aiki Ken (sword), Aiki Jo (staff), and Tanto (knife) training. These arts teach cutting vectors, target awareness, and force dynamics through precise movement patterns. Weapon practice enhances understanding of martial principles like distance, timing, and centering while developing coordination and focus through repetitive form practice.
Ground Techniques
Based on Kodokan Judo groundwork principles adapted for Aiki practice. Students learn to control and escape from ground positions while maintaining awareness of potential follow-up techniques. Training emphasizes safe practice through progressive resistance drills that develop body mechanics and transitional movement patterns applicable to real-world scenarios.
Self Defense Training
Focuses on real-world applications of Aiki principles against common attacks. Students practice defending against chokes, punches, and grabs while learning to manage multiple attackers. The curriculum emphasizes situational awareness and de-escalation techniques alongside physical defenses, with training scenarios designed to build confidence and practical response capabilities.

Among the best dojo for aikibudo in AZ or the USA in my experience. I met the founder of Jiyushin-ryu Aikibudo (CE Clark) in 2005 after years of online correspondence and discussion and recognized immediately that, ever 10 years of practicing Aikikai Aikido through numerous senior teachers in the US and from Japan, this form of aikido practice was the one for me. This dojo started as the Jiyushinkan (the main hombu or home dojo of the organization) under CE Clark and Aaron Clark.
