J. L. Patterson, Sr. started his company in 1946. Originally a coal and oil company, Patterson served a thriving Charlotte area. In 1951 after serving during WWII and graduating from the Citadel, J. L. Patterson, Jr. joined the family company. The 1960s saw major changes in the company as Patterson, Jr. moved the company toward commercial and residential heating and air conditioning sales and installations.
Dodson Patterson went to work for the company part-time in 1970 at the age of 16. He worked after school and on summer breaks through high school and college until he joined the company full time in 1977. Working as a service mechanic, residential installation mechanic and service manager, he eventually established the residential installation department.
