St. John was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Al. He graduated high school from Tuscaloosa Academy. In 1979 he earned his BS Degree in Biology and English from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). He then graduated with a BS in Animal Science in 1980 and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1984, both from Auburn University (War Eagle!).
