Your Trusted Animal Rescue and Adoption Partner in the Mid-Atlantic Region
Founded in 1929, we are the largest animal welfare organization in the Mid-Atlantic region, dedicated to ending animal suffering and empowering communities. Our mission centers on providing safety, love, and hope to over 20,000 animals annually across Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. We operate as an open-admission no-kill shelter, pioneering Delawares transition to the first no-kill state. Our services include low-cost veterinary care, spay/neuter programs, pet food assistance, and behavior resources to help families retain their pets during hardship. We specialize in rescuing abandoned animals, cruelty victims, and pets at risk of euthanasia in other shelters.

Our community-focused initiatives address lost/found pets, animal cruelty reporting, and domestic violence survivor support. In 2025, we expanded to manage animal care and control services in Washington, DC, partnering with DC Health to enhance lifesaving programs. Our volunteer and foster networks provide critical enrichment for animals awaiting adoption, including daily playgroups and temporary care for medical recovery. We advocate for humane treatment through education, policy, and direct community engagement, striving to make compassion a shared value.

Services
Animal adoption
We facilitate the adoption of dogs, cats, and small animals into loving homes. Our process includes health screenings, behavioral assessments, and post-adoption support to ensure successful transitions. Adoptable pets receive medical care, enrichment, and personalized matching with potential owners.
Low-cost veterinary care
Our wellness clinics offer affordable vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and routine care to underserved communities. Services aim to prevent pet relinquishment by making healthcare accessible, including programs for low-income families and emergency medical aid.
Foster care programs
Fosters provide temporary homes for animals needing medical recovery, socialization, or respite from shelter life. We supply resources and training to volunteers, ensuring animals receive individualized care until permanent adoption.
Pet food assistance
We distribute pet food to families facing financial hardship through partnerships and donations. This program prevents pet surrender by ensuring access to essential supplies, prioritizing households in crisis or transitional housing.
Animal cruelty reporting
We investigate and intervene in cases of animal neglect or abuse, collaborating with law enforcement and communities. Our outreach educates the public on recognizing and reporting cruelty to protect vulnerable animals and promote humane treatment.

We visited during the mega pet adoption and happy we did. Our new addition Buddy is such a teddy bear and gives us much laughs. Thank you to the staff who were thinking for both the family and for Buddy's sake to make sure we will be a good fit. Im truly grateful to give us and Buddy a chance..

Great place was super clean and didn't stink like most others. We went during the mega adoption and even with lines out the building it was super streamlined and efficient. The puppies we went for were already taken(gotta get there early) buuuut I spotted this Treeing Coonhound in the corner going unnoticed jumped on it. Everything was very easy and upfront, you want that dog, fill out the paper you got em. He's treed couple squirrels already, scent tracks great. But very calm indoors. Couldn't be happier. Enough about my dog tho great place great dogs all were friendly maybe one or two kids couldn

The staff at the West Chester campus were excellent at helping us find the right dog for our family. We spoke with a staff member at the front desk about five candidates. With her help, we narrowed our choice to one dog. The next day we came back with our two dogs and our whole family. Staff members were great at managing our dog meet and greet. We have big dogs and I was concerned about how it would go. They truly understand dog behavior and the meet went great. Mush is as wonderful as they said he would be. We highly recommend adopting from Brandywine Valley SPCA!

I had a wonderful cat adoption process with the SPCA from start to finish!! The Brandywine Valley location literally had a room full of almost 20 kittens that I could sit in and interact with until I found my little Mocha. She pretty much chose me! The adoption fee is well worth the everything that it includes. The staff was friendly and each one of them congratulated me on my adoption. I highly recommend them!!

We went to 3 different kennels trying to find a third dog to add to our family. Our current two dogs are pretty picky and the staff at Brandywine seemed the most interested in helping match us with a dog that met our specific needs. We finally found a match at Brandywine Valley! Our 72 lb, 2 yo baby is adjusting well.
