If you entered the United States without permission or inspection then you are presumed to be undocumented, or lacking lawful status, which is improperly referred to as 'illegal alien.' Depending on your particular background and various factors such as if you have been a victim of a crime, whether a family member filed petition for you, or immigration status of your spouse, parent or child, you may be eligible for temporary or permanent lawful status (green-card) including work authorization.
Removal and Deportation Court Proceedings

Immigrants including permanent residents (green-card) and non-immigrant on temporary visas could be subject to removal or deportation from the United States in violation of U.S. Immigration laws and which includes commiting crimes deemed to involve moral turpitude or classified as an aggravated felony under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Immigration and Customs Enforcements (ICE) is the enforcement agency working under Department of Homeland Security (DHS). ICE usually arrests immigrants or undocumented persons directly from jail or prison after the individual has completed criminal case sentencing. However, ICE may also arrest an individual from his/her home as a result of the individual have a recent arrest or conviction.

US Citizenship and Naturalization

A non-citizen is eligible for naturalization or U.S. citizenship provided that has been a lawful permanent resident for either three (3) or five (5) years after obtaining green card status, is at least 18 years old, meets the continuous residence and physical presence requirements, has good moral character for the three or five years, and no disqualifying issues or criminal convictions.
