Water Problems
Report
Hard water affects more than 85% of U.S. households. It can shorten the lifespan of water-using appliances and leave unsightly scale buildup on faucets and fixtures. Unsightly, rust colored stains on sinks, tubs, or toilets are an indicator of too much iron, magnesium, or iron bacteria in your water.
Iron/manganese
Report
Rusty-orange or black staining on sinks, bathtubs, toilet bowls, laundry, and plumbing fixtures are an indication that your water contains excessive iron or manganese. Drinking water may even have a yellow or orange tinge and taste metallic. Excess iron or manganese in your water is generally a nuisance but should produce no adverse health effects.
Bad Taste/smell
Report
The three most common smells and tastes include earthy, "rotten egg", and metallic. An earthy taste or smell may be caused by algae. The "rotten egg" smell is typically caused by hydrogen sulfide, and while it is not harmful to ingest, it can certainly make your water unappealing to drink. Metallic tastes are usually caused by the presence of iron, copper, manganese, and zinc in the water supply.
Acid Water
Report
Blue-green stains on clothes, fixtures, sinks, tubs, water-using appliances, and toilets are an indication that you may have low pH water, or acidic water. This blue-green color is caused by acid-corroded copper in your pipes, which also makes your water unsuitable for drinking. Problems with pH may be caused by acid rainfall, naturally low pH water, poor plumbing practices, improper electrical grounding, and more.
Chlorine
Report
Chlorine is present in the water in most of our homes today. Municipalities have used chlorine to disinfect the water supply since the 1850's and still do so today. Many microbiological contaminants can only be removed with the use of chlorine. However, the taste and smell of chlorine are unappealing and can also dry out your skin and hair.
