Bluff Lake Nature Center
Bluff Lake Nature Center is a unique urban natural area dedicated to educating and inspiring people of all ages to respect, protect, and connect with our natural world. Bluff Lake is a nonprofit agency that owns and manages a unique urban wildlife refuge and outdoor classroom in Denver. The refuge is home to an abundance of animals and native plants which thrive in a variety of habitats.

Bluff Lake is Denver's largest open space managed as native habitat, and Denver's only nonprofit nature center. We rely solely on community support. Tens of thousands of visitors, including over 8,000 area school children, come to Bluff Lake each year to enjoy a few moments of solace and connection to nature or to take part in one of our scheduled programs or events.

History
Report
The Bluff Lake area supports native short-grass prairie bluffs surrounding a 9-acre lake adjacent to a stream corridor. Time and geologic processes formed the bluffs long ago when streams flowed from the mountains towards the plains and deposited layers of soil. Prior to pioneer settlement of the area, Native Americans lived on the plains, hunting bison and deer on the bluffs.
Visiting
Report
Please note in that in order to protect our wildlife from stress, BIKES and DOGS (even leashed) are NOT ALLOWED. No sledding, tubing, or snowmobiling on the hill. It will damage the habitat and is very dangerous as there are yucca and rocks on the hillside. Look out for our public events here on our website, on our Facebook page, or at the kiosk at our site.

The Land We Are On
Report
The land that is currently known as Bluff Lake Nature Center, at Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Havana, in the county and city of Denver, in the State of Colorado, is ancestral territory of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute (Nu-agha-tuvu-pu) and Sioux (Ohthi akwi) Peoples. The Treaty of Fort Laramie (1851), the Treaty of Fort Wise (1861), and Cession 426 promised friendship, but resulted in the displacement of these peoples and the taking of their land.
