Bipolar Disorder-SF Depressive & Manic Depressive Assn
At this time, all MHASF events and support groups are completely remote. Have event questions? Contact Mary Jo De Silva at maryjo@mentalhealthsf.org. Peer support can be life-changing.

Those interested in harnessing their lived experience with mental health challenges to support the community as mental health peers should look into The National Certification of Peer Specialist (NCPS) credential-a 40-hour training for individuals interested in taking the NCPS exam, and for those wanting to enhance their peer specialist skills.

About us
Report
For over 70 years, MHASF has reflected the forward-thinking San Francisco is known for. We fought stigma and discrimination in mental health across diverse communities and changed policy, perception, and people. As a peer-run organization, we know change takes place when those affected by issues are centered in the solutions.
Warm line
Report
The Peer-Run Warm Line-which began operation in 2014-is a non-emergency resource for anyone in California seeking mental and emotional support. We provide assistance via phone and web chat on a nondiscriminatory basis to anyone in need. Some concerns callers share are challenges with interpersonal relationships, anxiety, pain, depression, finances, alcohol/drug use, etc.
Peer support services
Report
Peer counselors provide compassionate support that empowers participants to find balance and meaning. They share mindfulness skills, as well as individualized wellness plans. Our support groups provide non-judgmental support where one can feel heard and respected, as well as discover the information and resources one needs to succeed.
Peer counseling
Report
Our peer counselors help participants define their overall values and goals, in addition to developing self-care and mindfulness techniques. It is important for our team to help participants connect with the peer community and decrease isolation. If needed, we can also establish an individual Wellness and Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) with our participants, as well as provide them the resources and referrals they need to live a healthy life.
Peer providers – clinical integration
Report
Peer Providers work together with licensed mental health clinicians, service professionals, and mental health care teams to provide on-going, short-term (60-day), intensive case management and support to clients experiencing pre-, post-, and acute crises. Our peers are integrated within the continuum of support and services to stabilize and connect individuals with on-going help.
