The city is named after John Dickinson who received a land grant from the Mexican government in 1824 just north of the present location of the city of Dickinson. About 1850 a settlement was established along the shores of Dickinson Bayou. By 1850 Dickinson become a stop on the railroad. Dickinson had a post office in 1890 with the city's current name.
