Family Law
Report
There are many people who will never come in contact with the legal system. They will never step foot inside of a courtroom, they will never receive a Summons, and they believe that law is practiced exactly as portrayed on Law and Order. For most people, however, they intersect with the legal system here: in Family Court.
Alimony/Spousal Maintence
Report
Spousal maintenance, often referred to as "alimony, " is an Order requiring one spouse to continue to financially support the other. This support may be temporary in nature, or permanent. Marriage is treated as a joint enterprise between spouses. Their decisions made during the marriage are presumed to be joint decisions designed to support the entire family.
Divorce
Report
You may have heard the statistic that roughly 50% of all marriages will end in divorce. While this is an easy to remember percentage, it isn't necessarily accurate. Divorce statistics vary by age of the individuals and number of prior marriages.

Those married between the ages of 20 and 24 are nearly twice as likely to get divorced as those married between the ages of 25 and 29; and those facing their second or third marriage are significantly more likely to divorce. When it comes down to it, divorce is an individual decision and your situation is unique.
