Meet The Doctor
Report
Tonica Johnson, MD is a board certified, fellowship trained ophthalmologist. She specializes in cataract surgery and is certified in a wide variety of advanced vision correction procedures including laser cataract surgery to reduce patients' dependence on glasses. In addition to cataract surgery she also specializes in the care and treatment of patients with dry eyes, cornea diseases, glaucoma and diabetes.
Cataract
Report
A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. The natural lens, located behind the cornea and iris, focuses light on the retina to allow your eye to see a sharp, clear image. As we age, proteins in the lens can clump together and cloud the lens. As a result, light is unable to pass through this now cloudy lens and creates a hazy image instead of a clear one.
Glaucoma
Report
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye's optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss. Eye pressure is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage. In the front of the eye is a space called the anterior chamber.
Diabetic Eye Exam
Report
Patients with a diagnosis of diabetes should have an eye exam at least once per year. The eye truly is the "window" into health, because vascular change and damage that can occur silently in the body can be directly visualized in an eye exam. If you have diabetes, and or hypertension, yearly eye exams can prove invaluable as supporting information in gauging your cardiovascular health.
Pinguecula/Pterygia
Report
Pinguecula are deposits of protein, fat, and calcium, and look like a yellow spot or bump. Both pinguecula and pterygia are believed to be caused by a combination of dry eyes and exposure to wind, dust, and ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Protect your eyes from UV light by always wearing sunglasses when outside, even on overcast days (The UV rays still reach your eyes on cloudy days).
