A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.

Dr. Mentesana is a Texas native, born in Dallas. After graduating from Jesuit College Preparatory School, he attended Baylor University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He graduated from Baylor with honors, recognized as one of Baylor's top twenty seniors. Dr. Mentesana returned to Dallas where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Baylor College of Dentistry.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. When regular dental x-rays are not sufficient, a special type of x-ray maybe taken in order to visualize the treatment site in three dimensions.
