Leevy's Funeral Home was founded in 1932 by Mr. and Mrs. I. S. (Mary) Leevy. Mr. and Mrs. Leevy were both born in Kershaw County, South Carolina. After completing Hampton Institute, Mr. Leevy returned to Columbia and opened the Leevy Department Store on Washington Street, where he specialized in custom clothing and dry goods.

In 1995, when I. S. Leevy Johnson became sole owner of his family's funeral home, he reminded the community that Leevy's had "New Ownership but Old Friends." He signed every letter and ended every radio program with "Your Friends at Leevy's." Whereas the red rose means love, the white rose means peace, the YELLOW ROSE means FRIENDSHIP.
