It all started in 1959, with the cottage on the lake, where what now is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The 6 Lewis children would spend their summers on Lake Michigan with Muzzy, while Fuzzy would commute 8 hours from Indiana every weekend to indulge in the glory of the massive body of water which was their front yard.

Get your feet wet with Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak, Northern Michigan's 1st freshwater surf shop! We offer a full range of options to get you out on the lake and having fun. We have C4 Waterman stand-up paddleboards (SUP) for flatwater paddling. And when the waves are up, rent a surfboard, skimboard, bodyboard or a giant SUPsquatch and catch the excitement of riding a freshwater wave!

Whether you want to take your newly acquired, post-lesson skills to the next level, or have traveled from afar without your surf craft, we have the board for you. We have various lengths of soft-top surfboards by Gnaraloo & INT to get you on a freshwater wave. Demo boards available for an additional cost.

We introduced paddleboarding to the midwest in 2006 and since then have continued to share our passion for paddling and knowledge for the sport with those whom come through!

Skimboarding is for anyone and everyone big and small interested in trying an active water sport. You can rent a skimboard and use them in calm creeks, big waves, along the shoreline or to slide on a rail. And they're perfect for the shore of Lake Michigan. Other popular places include the outlet of Otter Creek and North Bar - all within skating, biking or driving distance of our shop!
