The mission of the Harpswell Community Nursery School is to provide a high-quality early childhood education program that emphasizes developmental learning, social relationships, family involvement, and care for the environment. Guided by the values of inclusion and equity, the school aims to serve a diverse population in terms of socioeconomic status, cultural background, and ability levels.

The Harpswell Community Nursery School was founded in the fall of 2003 in response to the strong need for an early education program in the town of Harpswell, Maine. The school is licensed by the Maine Department of Human Services and is located in the Fellowship Hall of the Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell Center.

Curriculum
Report
The HCNS curriculum is inspired by the approach developed by preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Through art, time outdoors, storytelling, music, dramatic play, block building and other creative activities, children represent their discoveries and emerging knowledge in multiple ways. We believe that a well-prepared, safe environment is essential to children's learning, as it encourages self-directed mastery of skills and knowledge.
History of HCNS
Report
HCNS was founded in the fall of 2003 by Elizabeth Davis, who saw the need for a high quality, center-based preschool serving Harpswell children. A guiding committee, made up of the school director and representatives from Elijah Kellogg Church and the Harpswell community, helped create the nursery school under the sponsorship of the Kellogg Church.
Philosophical Statement
Report
We believe in the Social Constructivist view that children learn by doing and through relationships with other children and adults. We believe that children learn through a variety of different modalities-Howard Gardner's "multiple intelligences"-and represent their knowledge through many different "languages", such as drawings, sculpture, writing, painting, construction, drama, and music.
Elijah Kellogg Church
Report
The Elijah Kellogg Church, Congregational, houses the nursery school and offers support in various ways. In 2002, the congregation completed and dedicated a new addition, including offices, classrooms, a parlor and the Fellowship Hall. These spaces are used and appreciated by a variety of community service groups; the nursery school occupies two classrooms and an office, and uses the Fellowship Hall during the week.
