You have heard just about everything when it comes to weight loss. Media personalities telling you to eat this, not that, and exercise. Doctors informing you of your medical problems and to lose weight, or your medical problems will continue or worsen. And you have tried just about everything out there.
Things start out well initially, but then you get to a point where your weight just will not budge. Or perhaps you stop your diet and the weight comes back, along with maybe a little extra. It is as if no matter how hard you try, your body wants to be at its current weight, and you are fighting it.

About Obesity and Bariatric Surgery
Report
It has been widely described that weight can be controlled by controlling calorie intake amounts, and that the surgeries work mechanically by restricting the amount of calories consumed. However, more recently, we have come to learn that managing weight is much more complex and the surgeries work on a much deeper level to alter metabolism.
About Weight Management
Report
It is intuitive to think that we can control our weight by regulating our calorie balance. In other words, through burning calorieswith exercise and eating less, our calorie balance should be negative and weight should decrease. Most of us (about two-thirds of us) are wired genetically, through material handed down by our ancestors, to save those extra calories or to be "thrifty" with our calorie intake.
How weight loss surgery works
Report
Surgery provides healthy weight loss through appetite modulation, rather than restriction and malabsorption. As we have discovered in the past 5-10 years, rather than being able to control weight through calorie balance, our weight is regulated by a preset thermostat. That means for many of us, it is very difficult to lose beyond 20-30 pounds, because our bodies start turning down our metabolism to work back toward that thermostat weight.
