Dr. Joel Wiersum completed his undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry before attending dental school at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1991. He has been practicing in the Kodiak area since his graduation, beginning in the public health services at the Kodiak Area Native Association.
