It was the early 1960's and an aspiring young man from a small town in northern Minnesota had just moved to the cities in search of opportunity and adventure. He took the first job he could find, working as a laborer for a large asphalt paving company. It wasn't long until he realized that this is what he wanted to do with his life.
At the age of 18 he was given the job of plant operator, making him the youngest asphalt plant operator in the Twin Cities. He ran the plant for several years, making asphalt for a number of large paving projects in the area, including the Burnsville Center when it was first built. In 1976, with pennies in his pocket, he took out a loan and started Valley Blacktopping, Inc.
