A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.

Upon graduating with scholastic and clinical honors from Baylor College of Dentistry and earning membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, Dr. Mark A. Dougherty completed his residency in periodontics at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Dougherty has served as Clinical Instructor of Periodontics at the Oregon Health Sciences University and as Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontology at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.He is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association and the Orange County Dental Society.

The main cause of periodontal (gum) disease is plaque, but other factors affect the health of your gums. Studies indicate that older people have the highest rates of periodontal disease. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that over 70% of Americans 65 and older have periodontitis.
