Before 1986, RDS was known as MINCO, and provided radon testing for mines and uranium exploration during the 1960s and 1970s. In the mid 80s, after elevated levels of radon gas were discovered in private residential homes, MINCO began to offer private radon testing and changed its name to Radon Detection Systems (RDS).
