IACCT is a nonprofit corporation organized exclusively for the purpose of promoting social welfare by strengthening, developing and correlating the work of its Members (the Community College Boards) and promoting civic betterment and social improvements allowed by law.

In carrying out its Purpose, the Association respects the need to preserve the unique communities and business partners of each Community College and within that framework helps them join together to utilize the strength of the group.Read about the critical issues facing our Community Colleges and things you may not know about this important sector of higher education.

Local school boards established Iowa's first junior colleges in the early 1900s. But only 16 were still in operation in 1965 as well as four postsecondary voc-tech schools. Iowa's Community Colleges were created in 1965 by Iowa Law, and all fifteen were officially designated by the State Board of Education in 1966.

The IACCT Values Statement provides a frame of reference for the decision making and priority setting in the organization. Education and Continuous Learning: IACCT advocates for Iowa's Community Colleges, the largest postsecondary system in Iowa, in furthering a sound economy by providing every community member an opportunity and encouraging them to pursue the achievement of their full potential at all stages of their lives.

Each of the fifteen Community Colleges has a Trustee who serves on the IACCT Board of Directors. The Community Colleges are served by 124 Trustees, who are locally-elected officials serving without pay. They oversee the largest Higher Education system of the state, serving the equivalent of nearly 21 percent of Iowa's population, or roughly 392,000 students in credit and non-credit coursework in FY2014.
