We pride ourselves on creating a community in which children, their parents, and our committed and highly experienced teaching staff come together to create the optimal environment to introduce young children to learning. We are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), voluntarily undergoing a comprehensive process of internal self-study and improvement and an outside evaluation by NAEYC validators.

This insures that we are offering high quality programs that provide a safe and nurturing environment, while promoting the development of young children. We also have been awarded 5 stars, the highest distinction, through our participation in Vermont's STep Ahead Recognition System (STARS) for Early Education.

Our history
Report
Shelburne Nursery School was established in 1955 with Barbara Snelling acting as the first board president. Countless area children have started their formal years of education at SNS and many have returned with their own children. The Shelburne Nursery School was among the first preschool programs in the United States to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1991.
Our mission
Report
The Shelburne Nursery School's mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment, which encourages children to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. The Shelburne Nursery School believes strongly in the development of the total child. We feel the child's physical, emotional, social and intellectual development is equally important.
Who we are
Report
Shelburne Nursery School is a parent cooperative and therefore relies on parents to help in as many ways as possible. Although our teachers develop the curriculum and teach all classes, all parents are a part of the organization and administration of the school. This allows parents the opportunity to play an important role in your child's first school experience.
A typical day
Report
Upon entering, children and parents sign in, wash their hands and then participate in free play between two of the rooms. We will have a greeting and we might play a game, or sing a song, or read a book, and we will discuss what the children can expect that day. This time is largely participatory and of short duration, longer for the older children than the younger group.
Community page
Report
We generally follow the Shelburne Community School year calendar, which can be accessed here. For school closings in the case of inclement weather, we also follow Shelburne Community School as posted here. However, if Shelburne Community School has a "delayed opening", we open at the regular time. An email will go out each week to all families.
